⚠️ SAFETY MESSAGE: Always disconnect the power supply before starting any appliance repair. Electrical components can cause severe shock or death if handled improperly. If you are unsure, consult a professional.
A bad smell in the fridge is more than just an annoyance; it's a signal that something in the "environment" of your appliance has shifted. Much like a "Fisher-style" investor looks for signs of "smelly" management or decaying moats, we need to find the root cause of the odor to ensure the system remains healthy and efficient. 📈
Let's explore the different types of odors and their sources together. I'll ask guiding questions along the way to help you refresh your fridge.
If you have a small coming form your fridge its usually due to a spillage or the machine has not been turn on for a while and the air and stuff inside it have gone off and started to smell.
Sometimes usually bad cleaning the drain off going to the catch tray at rear of fridge blocks with debris and water will be stagnant in the troughs which can smell bad after a while but usually it is just rotten food left to long, ensure you check the tray at the rear of the fridge too .
We recommend cleaning and disinfecting the whole fridge also make sure the rear drain is clear and the condense is draining away. Clean every service and every shelf thoroughly. Ensure you clean around the door seal to as things can leak and go bad behind them so check them out, remove and clean if needed.
Rarely, it could be the thermostat is faulty and not turning the fridge on or not on for long enough to keep the fridge below the desired temperatures 0°C to 4°C. If you just bought a cheap universal one it could be the phial length was to big or the temp settings were in correct for your fridge.
The "Scent" of Trouble 👃
| The Smell | The Likely Culprit |
| Rotting / Stagnant Water 💧 | A blocked drain hole or a dirty evaporation tray. |
| Chemical / Pungent Gas ☢️ | A potential refrigerant leak (requires professional attention). |
| Sour / Old Food 🧀 | Bacteria or mold growth in the gaskets or behind panels. |
| Burning / Ozone ⚡ | Overheating electrical components, such as the compressor relay. |
Step 1: The Drain Hole Investigation 🔍
The most common cause of a "stagnant" smell is the condensation drainage system. Every fridge has a small "gutter" at the back that leads to a drain hole. This water is supposed to drip down onto a tray above the warm compressor to evaporate.
If food particles get stuck in that hole, they rot in the standing water. Furthermore, if the water makes it to the tray but the tray hasn't been cleaned in years, the heat from the compressor "cooks" the grime, sending the smell back into your kitchen.
Before we check the back of the machine, have you noticed any water pooling at the very bottom of your fridge under the vegetable drawers? 🧐
